Das Leben ist schön und gut. Jeder Moment muss ausgekostet werden. So ähnlich könnte die Message des Films "Beginners"(Regie Mike Mills) lauten. Oliver (Ewan McGregor) hat vor Kurzem seinen Vater (Christopher Plummer) verloren und steckt noch in seiner Trauer fest, als er Anna (Mélanie Laurent) kennen lernt. Er verliebt sich und während er langsam wieder ins Leben zurück findet, erinnert er sich an seine Kindheit, an den Vater, der sich mi 75 als schwul outet und fortan die Schwulenszene aufmischt und an die letzten Tage mit seinem Vater die geprägt sind von dessen Krebserkrankung und seiner unbändigen Lebensfreude und dem Willen das Leben bis zum letzten Tag auszukosten. Ein Film der traurig und nachdenklich und gleichzeitig fröhlich und voller Humor ist und voller verrückter und geistreicher Dialoge steckt.
Christopher Plummer, der Olivers Vater Hal spielt, gewann den Oscar sowie den Golden Globe als bester Nebendarsteller.

Hal: That's why I worry about you.
Oliver: You re-wrote Jesus' death?
Hal: It was far too violent. We need new stories.
Oliver:
Why are you telling them you're turning the corner?
Hal:
Well, uh...
Oliver: You, you have stage four cancer.
Hal: It's not as bad as it sounds.
Oliver: Pop - There is no stage five.
Hal: [chuckles] That's not what it means.
Oliver: Well, then what does it mean?
Hal: It just means that it's been through three other stages.
